Power Wave (パワーウェイブ) is one of Terry Bogard's signature Special Moves from across the Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters series, first appearing alongside him in Fatal Fury: King of Fighters.
Description
- "A forward projectile. Keep faraway opponents at bay."
- —Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, Power Wave
Terry punches the ground with his rear fist, creating a wave of energy that travels across the ground.
The strength and distance of the move depends on which button is pressed. The
version travels at a slow speed, while the
version travels at a faster speed, at the cost of longer recovery time after performing the move.
Power Wave's properties have different effects in certain games;
- In certain games like in RBFFS, it can become a shockwave blast called Round Wave.
- In games such as KOF '96 - KOF '98, it becomes a short-ranged blast that fizzes out at a certain range. This version also appears in SSBU, if Power Wave is used in the air, or used when Terry is on the edge of the stage or platform; this would later be named Burning Wave (バーニングウェイブ) in COTW.
Starting with KOF XIII, Power Wave would gain an
variant. This version allows it to deal multiple hits. In Street Fighter 6 and Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, this variant visually resembles Power Wave's first appearance. Additionally in Street Fighter 6, if Terry enters Burnout through using this variant, a voice filter is applied, making Terry sound similar to how he originally called out the move in Fatal Fury: King of Fighters. This also applies to the Avatar in World Tour mode.
Strategy
- "Drive a fist into the ground and release a powerful burst of energy."
- —Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, Burning Wave
Terry's sole and iconic projectile, Power Wave's ground traveling motion and rather fast speed is good for poking overzealous opponents eager to rush in as much as space control. In Fatal Fury where the Linear Line lane system is in play, Power Wave helps to "close" a lane down, allowing Terry to set up more complex mindgame with him at an advantage.

Trivia
- Power Wave would eventually end up inspiring many other ground based projectiles in other SNK titles, such as Kyo Kusanagi's 108 Shiki Yami Barai and Haohmaru's Ougi Senpuu Retsuzan.
- Additionally, other fighting games would have ground based projectiles inspired off of Power Wave, such as Sol Badguy's Gun Flame.
- From a fighting game mechanic perspective, Power Wave can be seen as similar, but opposite of the Hadoken, a Special Attack performed by many characters in the Street Fighter series, most notably by Ryu. Both are projectiles with a Quarter Circle Forward Motion (
/236), with the difference being that the Hadouken travels in the air, while the Power Wave travels along the ground.
- The attack's original animation (a series of small energy pillars that advance towards the enemy) only appears in Fatal Fury: King of Fighters. All of the attack's subsequent appearances, however, use its Fatal Fury 2 animation, which changed it into a single shockwave.
- Unlike in his home series, Terry can use Power Wave in midair in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This is also the same with Burning Knuckle, Crack Shoot (air version re-appear in City of the Wolves, but only as Air REV Blow only), Rising Tackle and Power Dunk.
