- "Don't let his innocent smile fool you! This speed demon will destroy you before you can blink! CHRIS."
Chris (クリス) is a character from The King of Fighters series. He is a member of Team Orochi (temporarily under disguised team name, "New Faces Team" in KOF '97). He is one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Orochi, and is the dark Orochi counterpart to Kyo in regards of his ability to wield dark flames.[1] His official nickname is "Tempo Mixer" (
Development
Chris and his teammates were created to offset the remaining top three characters. [2] Chris was chosen as the host for Orochi's awakened spirit, a concept that began early in the game's production. He was designed as a character who can "kill with an innocent smile."[1]
Personality
Chris is an innocent, shy and cheerful boy with a heart of gold, though he tends to be somewhat anti-social. Despite his quiet nature, he is quite soulful and often takes on the role of the mature one in his group, offering information to his teammates when needed.[3] At first glance, Chris appears polite, well-mannered, and composed.[4] He always speaks courteously, though his politeness is more casual than formal.
However, beneath this gentle exterior lies a far darker side. Chris harbors a murderous intent even stronger than Shermie’s, earning him the unsettling reputation of being able to “kill with an innocent smile.” His dialogue can take on a precocious, arrogant edge, and he frequently taunts opponents—including his bandmates—in ways meant to provoke or belittle them. At times he even seems to look down on others, though he still uses respectful language when doing so. Whether he recognizes this haughtiness in himself remains uncertain.
After being revived, Chris kept his Orochi heritage but doesn’t seem to value it as much as before. He and the other Heavenly Kings still take their roles seriously, but their attention has shifted to boosting their band’s popularity, choosing to protect their fans—and humanity—rather than destroy them. Instead, they focus on messing with the Three Sacred Treasures, coming up with schemes like trying to drive a wedge between Kyo and Yuki, much to Yashiro’s annoyance.
Abilities
- Singing and Musical Instruments - Chris sings and plays the drums in his band, also has musical knowledge due to his occupation.
- Cooking - Chris has some culinary knowhow, doing this as a hobby.
Fighting style
Chris, though lacking formal martial arts training, relies on his natural speed and mixes it with acrobatic maneuvers, which gives him a mixup-pressure-based fighting style that involves him playing mind games with his opponents. If going all-out, he can also use his speed to overwhelm opponents with rapid-blows and smashing strikes in a sequence.

Trivia
- Chris’s back walk animation is very similar to moonwalking, likely as a tribute to the late singer Michael Jackson.
- His quote during his SDM makes a reference to another SNK game, Crystalis. He is believed to be based on a character in the anime Armored Trooper Votoms.[1]
- Chris shares his height and weight with Rose Bernstein.
- Chris is also so far, the only character via his HSDM of the Four Heavenly Kings to be able to manually access his other form. However, his portrait and current BGM do not change in both 2002 and Neowave until the former does in 2002 UM; even then, ending a round with a transformed-normal-Chris will have him revert back to his normal form in the next round.
- A transformed-normal-Chris also has access to the HSDM of his transformed counterpart as well.
- The other character capable of this, albeit belonging to the lesser Hakkeshus, and as a DM, is Leona, who can also transform back and forth between her normal and Orochi form, demonstrating her growing control over her bloodline.
- In Gamest's 1997 Heroes Collection, Chris was voted as the staff's twentieth favorite character. And in Neo Geo Freak's August 1998 issue, he was ranked as the 10th best character.[5]
